Yann LeCun confirms his new ‘world model’ startup, reportedly seeks $5B+ valuation
Yann LeCun recently confirmed the launch of his new AI startup, Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI), focusing on world model AI. The company, led by CEO Alex LeBrun, aims to raise significant funding and is positioned to advance AI beyond current large language models by simulating environments to improve prediction and reduce hallucinations.

Yann LeCun confirms his new ‘world model’ startup, reportedly seeks $5B+ valuation

Yann LeCun, a prominent AI researcher and former Meta Chief AI Scientist, officially announced the launch of his new startup, Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI). While LeCun is not serving as CEO, he will act as the company's Executive Chairman. The CEO role has been given to Alex LeBrun, co-founder and CEO of the AI medical startup Nabla.

Leadership and Funding Plans

Alex LeBrun, known for his pioneering work in AI-driven medical transcription, will transition from leading Nabla to head AMI. The startup is reportedly seeking to raise approximately €500 million (around $586 million) at a valuation of €3 billion ($3.5 billion) even before product launch, according to the Financial Times.

Focus on World Model AI

AMI Labs is developing world model AI, a forward-thinking approach where artificial intelligence tries to understand and simulate real-world environments to predict outcomes and cause-effect relationships. This contrasts with large language models (LLMs), which while powerful, can produce unreliable or fabricated information due to their non-deterministic nature. World models aim to mitigate these hallucinations by providing more structured, environment-aware AI predictions.

Industry Context

Other notable world model initiatives include Google DeepMind's Genie 3 and Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs. Comparatively, AMI's financial ambitions are quite high, but in line with the growing investor appetite for startups founded by world-class AI researchers. For example, Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines Lab recently raised funds valuing it at $12 billion during its seed round.

Impact on Nabla and Leadership Changes

With LeBrun moving to AMI, Nabla will appoint a new CEO. For the time being, its co-founder and COO, Delphine Groll, will lead the company. Nabla has established a partnership with AMI to utilize its models as they develop. The company has secured about $120 million in funding to date and continues to grow rapidly.

About Alex LeBrun

LeBrun has a strong background in multimodal AI development, having contributed significantly to natural language technology at Nuance Communications (which powered early versions of Apple’s Siri) and Facebook AI before founding Nabla.

Looking Ahead

LeCun’s new venture underscores the ongoing evolution in AI research from traditional language models toward world model-based systems. By improving AI's understanding of context and environment, these models could transform how AI predicts and interacts with the world.
