Sources: Cursor in talks to raise $2B+ at $50B valuation as enterprise growth surges
Cursor Pursues $2 Billion Funding Round Amid Soaring Valuation
AI coding startup Cursor is reportedly working on securing at least $2 billion in new financing, which would bring its valuation up to $50 billion. Sources familiar with the discussions say that current backers Thrive and Andreessen Horowitz are set to lead the round, with Battery Ventures and Nvidia also expected to participate.
Valuation Nearly Doubles in Six Months
If finalized, this funding round would almost double Cursor’s previous valuation of $29.3 billion from its last raise just half a year ago. The surge comes despite rising competition from other AI coding solutions like Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex.
Enterprise Growth and Path to Profitability
Cursor anticipates reaching an annualized revenue run rate exceeding $6 billion by the end of 2026, having recently hit $2 billion. This rapid growth is driven primarily by enterprise clients, with Cursor reporting profitability on these larger accounts, though it continues to operate at a loss on smaller individual developer plans.
Shifting Margins with Proprietary Models
Initially, Cursor’s dependence on third-party AI models led to negative gross margins, but the launch of its own Composer model and integration with more cost-effective solutions—such as China’s Kimi—have tipped Cursor into positive margin territory. These strategic changes are designed to reduce reliance on external providers and guard against displacement by competitors like Anthropic.
Company Background
Cursor, originally named Anysphere, was founded in 2022 by a group of MIT students—Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark, and Aman Sanger. The company has quickly become a leader in the enterprise AI coding space.
