Merger of Prism and Codex

Launched in January, Prism was designed to support scientific research with AI tools. Now, OpenAI is discontinuing Prism as a standalone project and merging its team into Codex, led by Thibault Sottiaux. This strategic move is part of OpenAI’s plan to further develop Codex into an all-encompassing application for enterprise clients, placing greater focus on core business areas like coding and AI-powered productivity.

Broader Changes and Executive Departures

Weil is not the only executive leaving OpenAI. Srinivas Narayanan, CTO of enterprise applications, and Bill Peebles, head of the Sora video app, also announced their departures. These exits follow an ongoing reshuffle on OpenAI’s executive team as the company optimizes for growth and prepares for a potential IPO. Leadership changes include president Greg Brockman overseeing products on an interim basis and COO Brad Lightcap moving to a special projects role.

A Renewed Focus on Key Offerings

Amid competition from other AI players and shifting market demands, OpenAI is narrowing its focus to enterprise and coding solutions. This has included phasing out less critical initiatives, like the Sora video generation tool, to streamline resources toward science and business-centered innovations.
