Google Introduces AI Overviews to Gmail for Workplace Users
At the recent Google Cloud Next conference, Google unveiled several enhancements for its Workspace suite, with a notable highlight being the integration of AI Overviews into Gmail. Previously used to summarize Google Search results, this AI feature will now help business users quickly extract key information from their emails.
Natural Language Summaries for Gmail
With AI Overviews, Gmail users can input questions using everyday language and receive brief, relevant answers without needing to browse through numerous emails. This tool can provide instant insights into topics commonly discussed in the workplace—such as project updates, performance metrics, invoices, feedback on presentations, travel details, and more—by summarizing content from multiple messages and threads.
Availability and Requirements
The AI Overviews feature will become the default for organizations with Gemini for Workspace and Workspace Intelligence enabled in Gmail. End-users must have specific smart features activated in their account settings. While AI Overviews were already accessible to consumers with certain Google subscriptions, this update expands availability to business, enterprise, frontline, and education customers through several Google Workspace editions, including:
- Business Starter, Standard, and Plus
- Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus
- Consumers with Google AI Pro and Ultra
- Frontline Plus
- Google AI Pro for Education add-on
Additionally, Google is making AI Overviews in Drive widely accessible to eligible users, building upon its previous beta launch in early 2026.
